Learning unit contents
This course is dedicated to present up-to-date approaches, including stem cells, antibody-based targeted therapies and biomaterials (internal and external devices, and nanobodies), to treat and eventually cure some of the most frequent human diseases. In addition to these emerging therapeutic options under development and validation in various medical fields - like neurodegenerative diseases, solid and non-solid cancers, orthopedics, etc... -, students will hear about current and future therapies used in the management of patients with type 1 diabetes.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students should be able to envision most of the emerging therapeutic options in common human pathological conditions, like brain diseases, cancer, orthopedic dysfunctions, diabetes, etc...
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This course is dedicated to medical and biomedical students with a strong background in normal cell biology and physiology.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course is mainly given ex cathedra, with additional references to renowned book chapters and reviews.
Journal-club sessions are organized at the end of the course, and implicate the active participation of the students.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face: this course is mainly given ex cathedra.
Distance-learning: the students are encouraged to read additional book chapters and reviews and to prepare in advance journal club sessions.

Depending on the context, the teaching may become hybrid (face-to-face or online) or full online. Recordings will be made available if necessary

Book chapters and up-to-date reviews are provided by each teacher at the beginning of each class.

Additional information:
The evaluation of this course is based on an oral presentation about one specific topic of the course choosen by the student (among a pre-established list of topics).
The criteria of evaluation include :
- Proactivity during lectures (20 %)
- Oral presentation (15') (50 %)
- Adequacy of coverage, knowledge and understanding
- Quality of the English (oral mostly + written (slides))
- Ability to convey a message, to communicate
- Understanding and quality of discussion
The exam may be organized online (following similar format). This will depend on the evolution of the health context.
