Learning unit contents

The end-of-term work of the first cycle (TFC) aims to ensure that the basic knowledge and skills of University training in philosophy are acquired by the students.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Following the training sessions that took place in the courses of "Introduction to contemporary philosophy" (PHIL0019-1) and "Exercises on the history of philosophy" (PHIL1103-2), the student will have to demonstrate that he or she is capable of

  • reading a philosophy text by grasping the core issues at stake in the text and questionning the key ideas held by the author (a mere summary will not be considered an original work).
  • writing a decent, clear and well-articulated paper
By agreement with his or her promoter, the student will preferentially choose either to study a concept or thesis of another author. There is no particular restriction regarding the range of addressed topics or authors.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

One single class (2h) will take place during the first term and be devoted to the main conventions to be followed for the writing and presentation of the final paper.

Additional information:

Assessment of the TFC will depend both on the quality of the written work and the quality of the oral defense.

  • Written piece of work: The TFC will consist of a work of 20 to 30 pages (font 12, 1.5 spacing). The rules of writing and method mentioned in the syllabus are applicable (see the "course material" tab). Correct syntax and spelling will be part of the work requirements.
  • Oral defense: The TFC will be the subject of a 60-minute oral defense before a panel of two people including the supervisor and another reader. The student will be required to briefly present the results of his or her work (10 minutes) and respond to any observations and questions that may be addressed to him or her.
The dates for handing in the TFC (1st and 2nd session) are set each year by the study council. Students are expected to scrupulously respect these deadlines. Any late submissions will be punished and could result in postponement. Schedule is as follows.

  • September-October: students get in touch with the potential supervisor and engage into reflections about the potential subject matter
  • The deadline for the choice of supervisor and subject matter is 30/10/2020 (please email the required information to A. Dewalque). Students are asked to add a short description (10-15 lines) to the provisional title.
  • November-December 2019: constitution of the panel
  • First day of the exam session: submission of TFC (End of study cycle task)
  • End of Juni 2021: defense
Schedule for the second exam session:
