Learning unit contents
The observation internship take place throughout the year in classes of French as a foreign language (or alpha-FLE). These observations are the subject of a brief written report by the trainee and discussed during reflective practice sessions.
The teaching periods take place in classes of French as a foreign language, second or alpha-FLE, mostly in secondary education in Belgium. Some practical hours can be realized in other contexts (asbl, social promotion, university, abroad...). These internships are the subject of a brief written report, of various exchanges with the supervisors, the members of the teaching department of the FLE, and the other trainees.
The reflective practice sessions consist of analyzing the observations of classes and the teaching stages in order to develop a critical view on the practices of class.

Extracurricular school practice
The trainee must carry out a training course of 10 hours outside the strict context of the class. He chooses a project or activities (observation or actual practice) according to his professional project and the context of the internship.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Students will learn :
- to develop professional knowledge in order to improve their own practice.
- Develop an accurate critical view of teaching practices associated with French as a foreign/second language
- Produce adequate lesson plans that are appropriate for a given teaching situation
- Adapt themselves to differing teaching conditions (public, in different kinds of spaces, institutional constraints, etc.)
- Use the tools offered in Special Didactics courses
- Analyze practices and propose improvements / alternatives.

Extracurricular school practice
This "non-course" internship offers the opportunity to discover other facets of the teaching profession of FLE, and the diversity of training or accompaniment activities for non-French-speaking learners (citizenship courses, integration path) .
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Non-native French speakers must have achieved at least the C1 level in the French language in order to be admitted to internship programmes.

Reflective practices
Completion of classroom observation workshops.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Initially interns must observe classes in French as a foreign language at the secondary school and at ISLV, and will be invited to discuss their observations at a meeting with other interns and the members of the Didactic Service for French as a foreign language.
Each practical course will include at least 3 hours of observation of the supervisor and the class in which the trainee will teach. These must imperatively take place before the teaching practices so that the trainee can adapt his preparations to the learners and to the particular context of the course.
The trainee will use the observation grid provided by the FLE Teaching Department (eCampus) and attach it to his training report.
These observation sessions will be exploited during reflective practice seminars.
After observing their supervisor and the class in which they will teach, the trainees must prepare lesson plans, in collaboration with their supervisor to whom they will submit their preparations at least 3 days before beginning to teach. The first preparations may also be submitted to a pedagogical instructor to assist in the development of the pedagogical sequences.
Each training course will consist of at least 12 hours of teachings in the presence of the supervisor, who will be responsible for evaluating the lessons learned and the trainee using the evaluation grid provided by the FLE Teaching Department.
The intern must write a brief reflexive report for each practicum and include the following documents:
the observation grid
the assessment grid of the supervisor
the comments of the supervisor
the self-assessment grid and the trainee's comments
The documents to be filled in are available on eCampus and must be deposited in one single file.
The reflective practice sessions consist of analyzing the observations of classes and the teaching stages in order to develop a critical view on the practices of class.
Trainees must actively participate in exchanges and attendance at sessions is mandatory.
The trainee must carry out a training course of 10 hours outside the strict context of the class. It chooses a project or activities (observation or actual practice) according to its professional project and the context of the internship (to accompany a trainer, a pedagogical coordinator or a social worker in his daily activities, to help in the creation of a project in an association - expo, excursion, ... -, accompany the director of a closed center, attend / participate in a course of citizenship, ...).
The project must be approved by the service before the beginning of the training course. The trainee should complete the document available on eCampus where he will explain the internship project, the modalities and the framework it will benefit to carry it out. The trainee will write a two-page report at the end of the internship.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The trainee must choose the place of internship from the list proposed by the special didactic service. He must carry out at least two internship in Belgium throughout his training, and diversify the types of establishments and publics in order to benefit from a rich and varied experience.
If the intern is already teaching, his current workplace can be acceptable as a location for internship work, provided that the student is being supervised by an internship director (fellow teacher, pedagogical director) and a member of the Didactics Service for French as a foreign language is able to visit the intern and observe him at that workplace.
Participation in reflective practice sessions is mandatory.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
If the health situation no longer allows the organization of face-to-face internships in classrooms, teaching practices can be carried out remotely, if the internship location allows it. In addition, "educational workshops" (simulated lessons) and "reflective practice" sessions will be organized by the teaching service in the second semester (face-to-face or online, depending on the evolution of the health situation).
People who have difficulties in following videoconference courses (no computer, no correct internet connection, no workspace at their home, etc.) are invited to report it as soon as possible.

Additional information:
The trainee completes the observation grid for each internship and appends it to his internship report. These observation sessions are not the subject of a quantified evaluation but of a "YES / NO" in the final evaluation grid. The "NO" leading to the adjournment.
Each training course is evaluated by the supervisor and a member of the FLE teaching department and by a self-assessment by the trainee.
The final mark obtained for each internship is an average of the marks awarded by the trainee, the member of the didactic department who visited the trainee, and the score resulting from the evaluation of the reports.
The reflexive practices sessions are not the subject of a quantified evaluation but of a "YES / NO" in the final evaluation grid. The "NO" leading to the adjournment.

Each training course is evaluated by the supervisor and a member of the FLE teaching department and by a self-assessment by the trainee.
An individual meeting is organized in June with the members of the teaching department. Each student presents a lesson that has worked less well, a critical analysis of this lesson and its teaching practice, and proposes improvements.
The final mark obtained for each internship is an average of the marks awarded by the trainee, the member of the didactic department who visited the trainee, and the score resulting from the evaluation of the presentation of the lesson at the end of the academic year.
