Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Theory (lectures) : 20h
Labs and training: 15h
This course is oriented to students in Physics with the aim to go deeper in one of the important chapter of their education program: optics
We'll bring additional knowledge in geometrical optics as well as physics optics (mainly wave-optics). It also requires to study the basic of electromagnetism.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of the course is to procure a solid basic in geometrical optics, insisting on the material properties and the applications.
Next, the physics optics develops the principle of light-matter interactions, interference, and diffraction.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Physics and Mathematics learned during 1st Bachelor and Q1 of 2nd Bachelor

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

See next section

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The course is organized during the 1st period.
Theory: 20h
Schedule to be defined
Lab and training sessions: 10+5h
Schedule will communicated to the students

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

In case of Red Covid code, the course will be organized only in a remote way.
In case of orange code, the situatioon will be reevaluated.
The reomte course consists in using the Collaborate plateform.
The course supports are:

  • Sillabus
  • Course slides with and w/o audio
  • Recorded course sessions every week.
Exercice sessions are also organized in a remote way.
A demo/lab session is foreseen but not possible in orange or red code.

Recommended or required readings

Notes, slide copies and videos are available on eCampus platform.
Additional notes about geometrical optics are available

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

A written exam takes place at the end of the 2nd period.
A second session of exam (written) is organized in Aug/Sept. Lab reports are quoted. The quotation is taken into account at a level of 20% of the global total.
In case of Covid red code:
No lab report
The written test is performed remotely via eCampus. The process will be sent in Mai.
In case of orange code:
As far as possible, the exam will be organised on site, normally.
