Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Partim A

The course aims at deepen and formalise the notions of electromagnetism taught in the first year. The course covers electrostatics, magnetostatics, electrodynamics, Maxwell's equations, conservation laws and electromagnetic radiation. It also covers the relativistic formulation of electrodynamics.

Partim B

The course aims at deepen the resolution of problems of electrodynamics.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Partim A

After the completion of this course, the student will be able to :

  • move from the global to the local (differential) form of the laws of classical electrodynamics
  • understand the physical meaning of Maxwell's equations and their consequences (superposition principle, conservation of electrical charge, energy, momentum, ...)
  • be able to set and solve Maxwell's equations of electromagnetic systems (in electrostatics, magnetostatics and electrodynamics)

Partim B

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Partim A

Physics and mathematics learned during 1st block

Partim B

Physics and mathematics learned during 1st block

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Partim A

The course consists of ex cathedra lectures supported by derivations on the blackboard.

Partim B

The course consists of ex cathedra lectures supported by derivations on the blackboard.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Partim A

Classroom based course organized during the 2nd period.
Based on the health situation, the course might switch to an online course.

Partim B

Classroom based course organized during the 2nd period.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Partim A

Recommended or required readings

Partim A

The slides of the theoretical course and a collection of exercices will be made available on myULg (pdf files).
Recommended book : "Introduction to electrodynamics", D. J. Griffiths, Prentice Hall

Partim B

A collection of exercices will be made available on myULg (pdf files).

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

A written test covering exercices (35%) and theoretical concepts/global comprehension (65%) is organized in June and August in face-to-face mode if conditions permit, otherwise in remote mode.
