- Understanding what ionizing radiation is and what the sources of ionizing radiation are
- Understanding the interaction mechanisms of different types of ionizing radiation with matter and with biological material in particular
- Understanding the health effects of ionizing radiation on the human body
- Knowing the relevant quantities and units in ionizing radiation dosimetry, in which context they are used and how they relate to each other
- Understanding how ionizing radiation detectors work and which detector can be used in which context
- Knowing how ionizing radiation doses can be assessed in practice
- Having an idea about typical radiation exposures and effects
