Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course will be made of two parts : regular teaching and seminar sessions.
Regular teaching (François Beets) is devoted to an examination of the reversal made by Condillac in the manner of conceiving the relationship between language and thought. For the earlier Condillac language is the condition of possibility of all thought. But in the Traité des sensations he admits the existence of a pre-linguistic thought, and language becomes a method of analysis. The later Condillac came to consider science as a well-formed language. The various developments in Condillac's thought will be related to the positions of his predecessors and successors.
Seminar sessions (Bruno Leclercq) will bevoted to contemporary research questions in the field of philosophy of language. On top of some introductory lessons by the teacher, students will be asked to attend to scientific activities (to be chosen in a program). Students will receive information on the topics of the seminar as well as on the program of scientific activities at the beginning of the academic year (i.e. on the 21st of September 2020 at 12:00am, room A1/3/24).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

As far as seminar sessions are concerned, a first information session will be held on Monday the 21st of September 2020 at 12:00am in room A1/3/24. The scientific activities among which students will have to make their choice will often be organized on Thursday afternoons but could also be held at some other time of the week.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

As far as scientific activites are concerned, they are replaced by a reading group on François Recanati's book Philosophie du langage (et de l'esprit), Paris, Gallimard, Folio essais, 2008. Students must read the book and attend the meetings (February 17 and 19, March 3, 5, 17, 19, 31, April 2 from 11 am to 12 am) but this work does not lead to some specific grade.

Recommended or required readings

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Oral exam for the regular teachning part.
Short written report (5 to 10 pages) for the seminar sessions.
