Learning unit contents
This course aims to familiarize students with international surveys on achievement in education. The ultimate objective is to convince students to contextualize the interpretation of the results in the methodological context of the surveys.
The OECD PISA 2003 Initial Report (Learning for Tomorrow's World: first results from PISA 2003. OECD, 2004) will be the basis of the course.
Before each lecture, students are invited to carefully read a chapter of the report. A particular attention will be given to the understanding of the statistical tools.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims at:
1.Understanding the methodology of international surveys in education and identifying the potential effect of the methodology on the surveys results;
2. Differentiating from a methodological point of view the OECD PISA surveys and the IEA surveys such as PIRLS or TIMSS and discussing the consequences of the differences on the results;
3. Understanding and describing the major statistical tools used in the OECD/PISA and IEA reports;
4. Reading and interpreting tables and figures;
5. Detecting over-interpretations;
6. Discussing potential biases that might explain some results.
