Learning unit contents

Sociology of education showed for a long time how much individual characteristics such as genre, immigration status or social and cultural origin could generate school inequalities. We will see how the notions of equality and equity may be applied to education and training. Then, we will connect the question of inequality of school access, careers and results in connection with the individual characteristics of the students, such as gender and immigration status. The course will be the opportunity to think about the "diversity paradox": how to take into account characteristics of the individuals without falling in the stumbling block of an essentialisme which would lead to reduce the individuals to their characteristics?

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At then end of the course, the students will have to be able:
- To investigate an educational issue having individual and collective incidences by referring to the education science theories
- To analyze the stakes and the societal effects of educational practices.
