Learning unit contents

Several field of research contribute to the anaysis of educational issues: history of education, sociology, economy, psychology, comparative education, docimology... The course will use several of these fields to analyse the school failure, and in particular on the grade repetition issue. Mechanisms which contribute to school failure and its individual and social consequences will be analyzed. Students will have to analyze a problem using several levels of analysis: the individual (student), the group (class) and the system (the education system). They will discover a variety of scientific tools to collect and analyze data in psychology and education sciences, including quasi-experimental methods and international surveys. They will discover how a research tradition of almost 60 years has evolved and now more than ever its pertience in the education system of the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
 
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end the course, the students will have to be able
1. To investigate an educational issue having individual and collective incidences:

- by referring to the theories of the education sciences - by basing itself on various methodologies and scientific tools - by basing itself on a diversity of educational contexts 2. To analyze the stakes and the societal effects of educational practices 3. To interpret research results such as they are presented in scientific studies

Oral presentations supported by power points and a book. Formative assessments on eCampus are planned.

Sessions have been recorded and are available on eCampus. Written discussions on eCampus allowed to communicate with the teacher.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

The assessement is based on - the content taught during the oral presentations; - the corresponding power points and documents; - Marcel Crahay's book (only seen parts).


The assessment will be a written examamination (True/False format) (100 items).
The assessment will be organized on eCampus.
Only students who require an "face-to-face" exam according to the modalities planned by the teacher will be allowed to present a face-to-face exam.
Written examination: 2021 Januray, 12th (6pm-8pm).
 
Consultation of exam exams: February 1, 2021, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., on request.
Registration compulsory no later than January 28, 2021.
