Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In the oceans, chemical, biological and physical processes interact in a complex and dependant way. This course specifically aims to give the basis of aquatic chemistry with a particular emphasis on greenhouse gases.
Chapters of the lectures:
1.Foreword

2.Physico-chemical properties of water

3.Seawater composition

4.Salinity as a conservative tracer

5.Ions in seawater

6.Redox reactions - production/destruction of organic matter

7.Green-house gases (CO2, CH4, N2O)

8.Gas exchange accross the air-sea interface

Chapters 1-6 are covered in 6h (2 lectures), chapters 7-8 are covered in 14h (7 lectures)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to cycles of organic and inorganic carbon, organic and inorganic nutrients, and greenhouse gases in various marine ecosystems.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge in chemistry, biology and physics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

20 h of therory + 5h Practical work + 2 d of field work in Calvi (Corsica)
Due to the health situation (COVID-19) the internship at STARESO (Calvi) is canceled.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

From 19 October, in following the recommendations related to instatement of orange code, teaching will be given by distance learning. Each lecture will be made available in the form of a ppt with pre-recorded audio, and during the time slot initially allocated to the lectures, a question-&-answer session will be held on Lifesize.
20 h of theory by 3 h slots
Lectures in English, slides in french

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

From 19 October, in following the recommendations related to instatement of orange code, teaching will be given by distance learning. Each lecture will be made available in the form of a ppt with pre-recorded audio, and during the time slot initially allocated to the lectures, a question-&-answer session will be held on Lifesize.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

NEW PROVISIONS valid from Avil 2021:
Due to the health situation (COVID-19) the internship at STARESO (Calvi) is canceled.
The practical work evaluation will not take place.
The course evaluation for 1rst and 2nd sessions will be based on the theoretical exam exclusively (100%).
The January 2021 exam scores will be communicated exclusively after the June 2021 deliberation.
The second session will take place in September 2021.
The evaluation will be based on a written exam (20 questions) of 3 hours in person (if the health situation allows it) relating to the theoretical course given during Q1.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
OLD PROVISIONS expired from April 2021:
The evaluation of this course is based on a theoretical exam and an evaluation of practical work during the internship at STARESO (50%-50%), for the first and second session.
In the first session, the theoretical exam is held during the January session.
In the second session, the theory exam is held during the September session; the evaluation of practical work during the STARESO internship will be postponed to the second session.
The result of the January theoretical exam is partial, and will not be communicated before the June deliberation. The final grade of the first session will only be communicated after the June deliberation.
The theoretical exam consists of 20 questions on the theoretical course (3 hours). Exceptionally, during the January 2021 session, the theoretical exam consisted of a personal reflection work, due to the health measures following the COVID-19 pandemic.
If the health situation allows it, the theoretical exam of the September 2021 session will have the classical format (20 questions on the theoretical course - 3h).
The modalities of the practical work during the 2021 STARESO course are not yet decided and will depend on the evolution of the health situation.

Work placement(s)

 Fieldwork at STARESO.
