Learning unit contents
The following concepts will be dealt with in class:
- Epistemology of qualitative research;
- Objectives of qualitative research;
- Usefulness of a qualitative approach in research in public health;
- Define a research question in a qualitative approach;
- Sampling;
- Data collection methods;
- Data analysis: general principles - thematic analysis - qualitative data analysis software;
- Quality criteria in qualitative research.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
General objectives
The course is an introduction to qualitative research methods. It aims to explain the interest of a qualitative approach in public health and to provide the participants with tools to collect and process qualitative information. Students will be invited to try out the qualitative research process.
Specific objectives
Students will be able to:
- Argue in which case a qualitative method should be used;
- Understand the stakes and objectives of the qualitative method v the quantitative method;
- Compose a qualitative sample;
- Compile an interview handbook to collect data through individual or group interviews;
- Conduct an individual or group interview;
- Successfully conduct a thematic analysis of the qualitative data;
- Approach the writing or reading of a qualitative research project in a critical manner.
