Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course intoduces to the design of the most usual machine elements. It has also an introduction to metal cuting fabrication processes.
CONTENTS
Intoduction to ISO tolerances.
Force determination in a transmission.
Preliminary design of a shaft.
Fatigue resistance and criteria.
Design of shafts
Shaft-hub assembling.
Rolling bearing computation.
Journal bearings.
Gears : spur and helical meshes. AGMA and ISO methods
Belts and puleys.
Machining technologies: turning and milling operations.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
After this course, the student will be able to dimension the most used machine elements. This ability will be useful in the integrated project.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prerequisites: Geometry, rational mechanics, elements of strength of materials.
Corequisites: There is a strong relation between this course and the other one, named Processus industriels de mise à forme. It constitutes also a basis for the course entitled Méthodes de fabrication en série and the integrated project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Oral course and exercises which are applications and solution of a desgin project.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
face-to-face course.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Any session :
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
- Remote
written exam ( open-ended questions )
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred in-person
Additional information:
Part 1: Contnuous evaluation
- The students have to solve several homeworks (mini projects) by groups of two. The assessement is based on the reports.
- Lab reports of the machine tooling tranings (no pandemic situation)
- Exam includes a part with questions of theory and a part of problem solving (with open books)
- Except on pandemic, attendance to the two lab sessions is mandatory to get the credits
- Attendance of 60% to the supervised work sessions is mandatory to get the credits.
- To get the credits, it is necessary to obtain marks greater or equal to 7/20 in both parts. In case of failure, the final mark is the lowest mark of the two parts.
