Learning unit contents
During the academic year 2014-2015, the course will have for subject «literary History and historicity of the text. Flaubert's Salammbô».
The course will ask the classic philological question : in what measure the sense of a past text is approachable to us ? The course will examine the main positions of the modern hermeneutics, before envisaging the contribution of the discipline of the literary history to the debate. We shall insist in particular on the concepts of «horizon of expectation» and of «space of the possibles». This whole theoretical reflection will then be implemented on a concrete case : Gustave Flaubert's novel Salammbô, whose reading is compulsory.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, the student will be able:
- To master and to use the theoretical concepts seen in the course;
- To implement a detailed historicized reading of a literary text;
- To operate the research procedures (bibliography, critical readings, etc.) necessary to reach the previous objective.
