Learning unit contents

The main subject of this course is the life of the text in the Middle Ages, considered from both the point of view of textual tradition and that of the critical edition of medieval Romance texts. Each lecture will be divided into two parts. The first part, predominantly theoretical, will consider principles, problems and aporias of textual criticism. The second part will focus on a specific theme (including examples which will illustrate the first part) : the origins and the diffusion of the Holy Grail legend in medieval Western literary and textual culture.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Analysis and interpretation of a textual tradition as a whole. This implies a high degree of awareness both in the assessment of scholarly editions of medieval Romance texts and in the recognition of the peculiarities of medieval Romance texts. Full understanding of the principal editorial methods and approaches to textual criticism.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of Old French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Study of textual culture and its methodological and historical issues, based on examples chosen from various traditions of Romance texts. What is a critical edition? How is it read? How is it used? How is a useful and high-quality critical edition prepared? We will go into further depth with these questions by working on both old and recent critical editions of Romance texts, evaluating their use and their worth. We will chiefly work on printed books and on digitisations of manuscripts available online.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Distant teaching : lectures and videoconferences sur Lifesize. Some seminars in class will be organised during the term (if the COVID-19 situation allows it).
Duration and period: 45 hours, first term.

Additional information:

Final oral exam (in class or on Lifesize, depending on the COVID-19 situation). Discussion of the contents of the paper (70%), presentation of group work (in teams of 5-6 students) on a subject agreed with the professor (30%).
