Learning unit contents

This seminar is designed to focus more specifically on the two more transversal competences of the ULiège speech & language therapy competency framework:
1) Establish a professional relationship by communicating in an appropriate manner. The emphasis will be on the 'collaborating with other professionals' situation.
2) Develop the required expertise in order to provide patients and society with a quality service, by adopting the approach of lifelong learning and development of the profession, and by demonstrating professional ethics.   The seminar is comprised of two parts, which each focusing on a specific competence.
During the first term, the seminar is focused on the 'professional relationship' competence in collaboration with neuropsychology students (tutors in charge: Anne-Lise Leclercq & Christelle Maillart). Two intradisciplinary sessions followed by interdisciplinary sessions are planned on the basis of a clinical vignette using the ARPc educational tool, which focuses on learning to solve complex problems.
The emphasis in the second term is on the 'Expertise' competence (teachers in charge: Nancy Durieux & Christelle Maillart). In this part, students who were already acquainted with the evidence-based approach in Y1 of the master's degree, will extend their training in this approach by examining the issue of clinical guidelines.

Overall, the seminar is a place of learning that encourages the development of reflexiveness and the decompartmentalisation of the field of action in speech & language therapy, by proposing shared moments of reflection on an identified problem (e.g. making a conclusion; therapeutic choice). It is an integrative learning mechanism designed to help students to put into perspective their clinical experiences from their placement.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the part devoted to solving complex problems, students will be able to:


  • Identify the speech & language therapist's field of action in a complex care situation;
  • communicate information to other professionals in a clear, polite, well-argued and adapted manner;
  • fit into a multidisciplinary job.
At the end of the 'EBP' part, students will be able to:


  • Formulate a clinical question;
  • Familiarise themselves with the patient's preferences;
  • Find the relevant guidelines based on a clinical situation;
  • Critically assess the selected clinical guidelines.

It is compulsory to attend the ARPc sessions, on Wednesdays 21 and 28 October 2020, from 09:00 to 13:30.

Students are also required to attend the EBP sessions, organised on Wednesday 02/10/2020 - S 30 (B5b) & Friday 04/02/2020- R.53 (B4) from 9:00 to 13:00 (unless there are changes).

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

One part of the assessment is based on participation in the ARPc face-to-face sessions and an report. The second part of the assessment is a collective piece of work focusing on EBP to be presented on Wednesday 04/02/2020. Students must pass every part of the course to pass the year. If the student fails one of the two parts, the overall mark for the unit will be a fail.
