Learning unit contents

Lectures about Ancient Egyptian texts based on original documents. This learning unit aims at developping the students skills in the fields of epigraphy, palaeography, ecdotics, and hermeneutics.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Ability to make an hieroglyphic transcription, a grammatical analysis, a translation, and a detailed philological commentary of ancient Egyptian sources (from the Old Kingdom down to the Ptolemaic Period).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of Classical and Late Egyptian.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In this seminar, I resort to rich digital media, with pictures of the original documents and standardised hieroglyphic transcriptions of the texts under study.

Recommended or required readings

Students are asked to read a series of scholarly papers linked to the yearly topic, which are provided in digital format.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Personal essay on a unpublished Egyptian document and written + oral exam on the topic of the seminar.
