Learning unit contents
The course will begin with an introduction to the historic background to the literatures of the African diaspora. The course will be devoted to the discussion of selected texs, including three novels, a film and a play, addressing various facets of the notion of masculinity.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students are expected to master the main theoretical notions pertaining to the study of masculinity in literature. They will be able to use these notions in the textual analysis of literary works.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Good knowledge of English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
First term, 2 hours a week. The course involves seminar discussions and the active participation of students. First class on 21 September, 1pm.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
The oral exam will be done online, via Blackboard Collaborate.
Recommended or required readings
Poems and a few essays will be available at the beginning of the course.
Three novels and a play will be discussed in class:

- Kwame Kwei-Armah, Elmina's Kitchen, 2003 (Methuen)
- Caryl Phillips, In the Falling Snow, 2009 (Vintage)
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Written research essay which will be discussed during an oral examination.
