Learning unit contents

Translation from Ancient Greek and Greek prose composition. Some short chapters from Greek grammar. There might be as well exercises on grammar, restitution of missing text and overall understanding of the meaning of a text. Private reading in 2020-2021: Aristophanes' Birds (with metrical reading of the dialogues).
Personal work:
a) reading and oral account of a scientific paper about an aspect of Greek philology. Examples: phonetics, syntax, lexicon, stylistics, synonymy, metrics, manuscript tradition/editing texts. In December, the student will have to present orally a critical summary of the article and apply its results to a short selected Greek text.
b) a short written lexicographical notice containing entries of a French-Greek dictionary belonging to a semantic field. Compulsory bibliography.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Enhancing students' knowledge of Ancient Greek.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of Ancient Greek language (grammar, stylistics and vocabulary).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Active participation in the exercises.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Two hours a week during the first term.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Depending on the health situation, teaching and assessment could be done at distance.
Update of December 11, 2020: the January exam will be a remote oral.

Recommended or required readings

Notes will be available on eCampus. No syllabus. Private reading of the Birds in the Paris edition by Victor Coulon.
For the lexicographical task, existent French-Greek or English-Greek dictionaries will be helpful.

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Written exam. Oral examination on the private reading.
B) For the remaining 5 ECTS (specific for MA 2):
Oral report of the personal research on a philological topic and written lexicographical notice.
