Learning unit contents

A series of texts illustrating a theme, a character or a classical author. Seneca, Lucretius, Titus Livy, the origins of Rome, Harotius, Seneca, Vergil, the emperor as seen by Ammianus Marcellinus. In general, a prose writer one year and a poet the next.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To show the various audiences concerned how a commentary, whether historical or literary, can only be based on direct contact with text, hence on a precise understanding and rigorous translation.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of basic Latin after at least one year of Latin at the university (Introduction to Latin or Latin authors I).

Recommended or required readings

- Reference works: a set of texts is available online (ecampus) every year. Students should also obtain: F. GAFFIOT, Le grand Gaffiot. French-Latin dictionary (Hachette) [full version] ; a Latin grammar.
Compulsory reading: R. Martin-J. Gaillard, Les genres littéraires à Rome [a chapter of student's own choice with the exception of the chapter relating to the autheur studied].

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

written exam ( open-ended questions )

oral exam AND written work

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

Additional information:

oral exam in June: reading aloud one of the passages explained in class, retranslation, grammatical justification, commentary; questions on the book proposed.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 20% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
