* Further study of the main chapters of Dutch grammar (as in LANG8020) * Further study of the vocabulary & exploitation of the contents of texts; lexical and grammatical exercises; speaking and writing exercises
* Study of political vocabulary * Listening comprehension exercises
CEFRL levels of the course: Listening A2+ Reading B1 Speaking A2 Lecturing B1 Writing A2+

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

* This course develops basic language skills, especially the mastery of oral and written Dutch from both the passive and active points of view.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Level A2 (as taught in LANG8020) is recommended for grammar.
Evening courses (see ISLV) or online courses (@LTER).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Reading and listening comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises, debates, written assignments, etc.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

2 hours a week during the whole year including :
1 hour of grammar + grammar/vocabulary exercises + listening comprehension + writing
1 hour of reading comprehension + speaking
We might have to move our classes online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We might therefore transition to a mix of in-person, hybrid, and online classes.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

  In case of code orange or red due to Covid, the grammar sessions will be taught online. All information will be send by mail if this should be the case. If necessary, the exam will be organized online. Details will be communicated in due course.

January 2021 exam:
- CODE ORANGE: Online oral exam based on a written document with MCQs.
 - CODE RED: Online oral exam based on a written document with MCQs.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions ) AND oral exam

- Remote

written exam AND oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person


Additional information:

Oral and written exam at the end of the year.
Examination in January: vocabulary (Basiswoordenschat) The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 20 % of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
Oral examination: if face-to-face examination is not possible, oral examination via Webex.
