Learning unit contents
The curriculum in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine comprises English language courses, which aim to give students a thorough command of written and spoken English in the field of veterinary medicine.
The purpose of the first-year course is :
(1) to enable students to revise general English (CEFRL levels B1-B2 for reading) and, (2) to introduce the basic vocabulary of veterinary Medicine in semi-autonomy (i.e. through guided self-learning).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The first-year English course is a levelling course which aims to revise the elements of general English and to introduce the scientific vocabulary.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge of general English grammar and vocabulary (A2 or B1 level).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
On top of the self-learning tasks based on a schedule posted online, the students will do three self-assessment tests for which they will receive a detailed online feedback and which will be corrected in class.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
This course is a blended course. This year, due to the sanitary situation, it will exclusively take place online. It consists of:
6 online modules with guided and supervised self-learning units
- Grammar revision chapters with exercises and keys.
- 2 online grammar progress tests.
- 6 listening comprehension tests on eCampus.
- 4 comprehensive self-assessment tests (with detailed online feedback).
- 4 online lectures with additional explanations and exercises.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
As long as the sanitary situation requires it, all courses will be offered online.
The January exam will be held online. It is composed of three tests (reading, grammar and language) composed of questions similar to those of the tests done during the first quarter radomly taken from question pools.
Each test will be timed and wrong answers will be penalized.
All the necessary information about the tests (duration, type of questions, penalties, etc.) will be available on eCampus in early January at the latest.
Recommended or required readings
(1) Online eCampus learning modules and exercises,
(2) the ISLV Basic English Grammar book and/or the ISLV Interactive Grammar Website on eCampus
(3) The course book which contains the veterinary English articles of the e-campus modules, a self-study grammar course with exercises (and key online), the vocabulary of the course, and past exams.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:
Two grammar progress tests and five listening comprehension tests to be done online.
Three self-assessment tests (reading comprehension and English in use MCTs of intermediate - B1/B2 levels) with detailed feedback from September to December.
Written exam in January on the modules, vocabulary and grammar taught in the first quarter. The exam consists of reading comprehension, vocabulary and English in use MCTs.
