Listening activities based on texts and articles dealing with various subjects form the basis of this course. We will also work on the language functions that are essential when one has to take the floor, take notes, or ask questions during lectures, debates, interviews etc.

Listening activities based on texts and articles dealing with various subjects form the basis of this course. We will also work on the language functions that are essential when one has to take the floor, take notes, or ask questions during lectures, debates, interviews etc. Students will be required to participate actively in the course, which implies that attendance in class is essential.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
As this is a C1 level course, students are expected to be able to do the following by the end of the term:
- understand extended speeches and lectures even when they are not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signaled explicitly.
- follow complex lines of argument provided the subject is relatively familiar.
- take clear, structured notes based on an oral presentation.
- summarise both orally and in writing the main ideas they heard in a listening exercise.
- take the floor in order to interrupt politely, ask for addtional information or clarification.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The level of this course corresponds to the European levels B2/C1. Students will thus need to have good basic knowledge of English and thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar studied in the bachelor's years.

The examination includes multiple-choice questions, among others, and will take place face-to-face on the university campus for a duration of 1 hour 45 minutes.
If the authorities explicitly decide otherwise, the examination will be organised via the eCampus platform, for a duration of 2 hours.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
The final examination will consist of a listening comprehension exam.
It will deal with the material seen in class but students will also be required to listen to and prepare a series of audio files on their own (students of the master in anthropology will be assigned additional audio files). The examination will then test the students' comprehension of these recordings which will be made available on eCampus in the second half of November.

The examination will then test the students' comprehension of these recordings which will be made available on eCampus in the second half of November.

The final examination will consist of a listening comprehension exam. There will be three main parts in this examination.
The first part will deal with the material seen in class. In the second part, students will have to answer questions about a file that will not have been studied in class. Finally, students will be required to listen to a series of audio files at home. Part III of the examination will then test the students' comprehension of these recordings.
The recordings file will be available to students around the Easter break.
