Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The class is divided into 10 sessions, the first of which is an introduction to the class. 7 sessions are centered around societal issues. Each of them contains input (texts and videos), exercises on that input and language exercises (grammar, vocabulary, style, pronunciation, etc). 2 sessions deal with writing an essay.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The two main objectives are the following:

  • the ability to write a comment on a text or a video in rich and correct English;
  • the ability to discuss a text or a video in fluent and correct English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

B2+ level (CEFR).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The class is mainly taught in the shape of group oral presentations. Each of the 9 sessions is chaired by a group that corrects some of the exercises and runs the discussion session on the texts and videos to prepare.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

30 hours taught in class

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

If the authorities forbid an in-person written exam, it will take place online. The oral exam takes place online unless the student's equipment doesn't allow him or her to be properly assessed.

Recommended or required readings

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

The finale grade is calculated as follows:

  • Written exam (35%)
  • Oral exam (35%)
  • Chairing a session (10%)*
  • Classwork: attendance and homework (10%)*
  • Writing essays similar to the exam (10%)*
* The grades obtained for those modules are transferred from the first to the second session. They cannot be improved.
None of two exam grades can be transferred from the first and the second session.
