Learning unit contents
The course is composed of 4 modules that span over 2 years and that are taught every two years:
- Module 1 (academic year 2020-2021): we discuss themes dealing with the economy, finance and management so that students can develop the 4 communicative skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) as well as improve their grammar and vocabulary;
- Module 2 (academic year 2019-2020): discussion based on a reading file composed of newspaper articles and one published study;
- Module 3 (academic year 2019-2020): pronunciation (including stress, prosody and fluency);
- Module 4 (academic year 2019-2020): summarising a video.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Communication skills acquisition and practice in both everyday and business contexts, specialized terminology, reading and listening comprehension, written and oral communication (business meetings, interviews, phone calls, business correspondence, etc.).
- Improvng one's pronunciation;
- Being able to produce a written summary of a video;
- Being able to summarize and discuss chosen and prepared texts.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A working knowledge of everyday English (end of secondary school level), i.e. the level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference. Students who haven't reached that level must bring their English back up to level on their own.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
If the authorities forbid an in-person written exam, it will take place online. The oral exam takes place online unless the student's equipment doesn't allow him or her to be properly assessed.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
The final grade .../20 (100%) is calculated as follows.
Module 1 (50%) :
- Vocabulary and grammar: MCQ and/or open questions (10%)
- Reading: open questions on a new text (10%)
- Listening: open questions on a new video or sound file (5%)
- Writing: writing a short text based on a prompt (10%)
- Oral interaction: taking part in an interactive discussion with other students (15%)
Module 3 (10%) : pronunciation assessed through the student's reading out a chosen text.
Module 4 (15%) : discussion on the basis of a reading file prepared by the student.
Should the student fail or decide to retake a dispensatory exam, he or she must retake the whole module 1, and the modules 2, 3, and 4. Only the latest grade is taken into account even if it is lower than the previous one.
