Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course is divided into interwoven two segments. The former will focus on the coursebook (chapters available on myulg) whereas the latter will focus on academic English. The chapters of the coursebook as well as the various learning activities in class aim at enabling the students to consolidate and to improve their oral and written skills. The course is based on the study of different modules from the coursebook. Students must prepare actively and regularly at home for the weekly class. Presence and participation are necessary and will be taken into account in the final mark. The book includes the four main language skills (writing, reading, speaking and listening) as well as grammar and vocabulary in use. Students will be expected to do the language exercises in the workbook and progress will be assessed by a number of quizzes. The academic side of the course will focus on the pitfalls of written English, and the requirements to write and present information in a formal way.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Revision and enrichment of advanced English vocabulary as well as of its appropriate use.
- Reading comprehension: understanding texts, summarizing the information, reacting to the content.
- Revision and extension of essential and advanced grammar principles and rules.
- Academic English
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
In addition to the two-hour per week class, students are expected to work another 2 to 4 hours on their own (preparation of the different modules in the coursebook and exercises in the workbook).
Speaking French is frowned up in class.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Weekly sessions of 2hrs each.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Code Orange
As best as possible, classes will resume normally. Those who wish to attend are more than welcome to do so. Those who do not feel comfortable attending class in such conditions will not be penalised.
All files will be made available to all students though the usual platform. Any explanations given in class will either be transcribed or recorded for those who cannot attend.
Code Red
The main way forward in this scenario is through self-work though modules and texts made available to students via discord and myuliege. Seminars or video conferences will be organised in order to maintain the current level. Additional activities will be put in place.
The January session
Due to current sanitary crisis, it might be best for all involved if the January listening comprehension is not held in person. Therefore, the video/audio will be streamed through discord. Students will have four (instead of the normal three) playthroughs. Students are then required to send back their answer sheet within the next 15 minutes.
Recommended or required readings
Chapters of the coursebooks will be made available on myulg. Plus required reading materials for the examination.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Any session :
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire ) AND oral exam
- Remote
oral exam AND written work
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred remote
Additional information:
are only two options:
1) Business as usual, meaning a written exam (abstract writing) and an oral exam
2) Virtual exams. This would entail an essay to write about one of the three books and an oral exam through Discord about the other two books. Students get to decide which book they write about, eliminating that book for the oral exam.
