Learning unit contents

The remedial course has the aim of revising the basic grammatical structures as well as training reading comprehension skills.
Here is the detail of the CEFRL levels of the course : reading (B1); [speaking (B1), writing (B1)]

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- Refreshing and increasing students' knowledge of grammar.
- Activating reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, detecting text coherence.
- Expanding the vocabulary related to the fields of psychology

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A basic knowledge of English (equivalent to the A2-level of the CEFRL)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Weekly 90-minute classes in average-sized groups.
The course module will be devoted to revising the basics of English grammar as well as the training of reading skills.
Students will have to prepare the reading file at home for the final exam. This reading file is made up of articles that deal with psychological themes.

Regular practise is key to the student's progress.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Every week will either consist of a 90-minute class or work to do on their own at home. Students will therefore have to stay at home every two weeks.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

1° A  test will assess students' assimilation of the grammar rules and vocabulary seen in class during the first semester. This test will take place in January and account for 35% of the final mark.
2° The final written exam (65% of the final mark) will be based on 1) the grammar modules, 2) the vocabulary of all texts seen in class as well as the general vocabulary from the grammar book) 3) the reading file. It will assess students' reading abilities as well as their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary seen in class.
Multiple Choice Questions will be used for both the January test and the written exam in June.

Organizational remarks

Students can train on-line on the "grammaire de base interactive" module on e-campus.
Students can also sign up for one of the English courses organised within the framework of the so-called @lter program. These interactive courses ideally complement the first-year refresher course as well as the second-year level A course.
