Learning unit contents
Historical geography is the reconstruction of the geographical state of a territory during a chosen period, based on historical or other sources. It is also the study of the evolution of this geographical state from one era to another. Historical geography is therefore not the same as the history of geography, which is the history of the advances made in this discipline.
The course is divided into three parts.
The first part shall introduce the subject. Its history, sources, methods, the historical trends that have structured it, its challenges, and the aspects that have yet to be explored, will be dealt with in succession in order to offer students a clear and precise view.
The second part will consist of applying the subject to a particular subject, in this case, the study of the late medieval pontifical states. The focus will be on how the military apparatus (fortifications and garrisons) played a role in the creation of a territory.
The last section of the course will present research fields extending or connected to historical geography, such as world history or environmental history.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this teaching unit, the student will master the various aspects of Historical geography intended as a specific research method. He will be able to use it as a tool in the essays he will have to submit during his cursus or to build his Master thesis around this theme.
