Learning unit contents

This introduction to land surveying present in a broad way all the surveying operations (levelling, traversing, survey, setting out) and the associated instruments (levels, theodolite, total station).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

- to get a basic knowledge of surveying operations and practical methods - to get a basic knowledge of the instruments - to be able to organise a small surveying work - to be able to exchange with geomaticians

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course assumes good knowledge of basic mathematics: geometry, trigonometry, as well as of some elements of general physics: optical and electronic mechanics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to the theoretical course, 3 practical work sessions are organised (problem-based). These will include field work such as a closed levelling, a traverse and a tacheometric site survey and a setting out.

Course notes are available on eCampus platform. Numerous recent reference books (mostly in English) are available at the library of earth sciences.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

Each field work session will be the subject of a written report which is graded. A written examination is organsied and eventually, an oral examination is organised. The whole evaluation process is described in the course's overheads.
