Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The aim of this course is to present the fundamental principles of statics and structural mechanics as they are used by civil engineers and by architect engineers.
The main topics of the course are: description of typical construction elements with the way they work, identification of statically determinate structures, to establish the shape of effects of actions (M, N, V) in a simple structure, principles of bracings and wind bracings, load transfer.
The students will apply these concept in the conceptual design, the design and the realisation of a timber structure that has to meet a given objective.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, the student will be able to do the conceptual design of a simple structure, to determine effects of actions in the structure, to ensure its global stability, while taking into account a reasonable utilisation of available ressources.
He will be able to write a technical report that describes his hypotheses, his calculations and the obtained results, including drawings for execution.
He will be able to work in a team, as well for conceptual design, as design or practical realisation.
The complete list of the KLO for this course is defined in the matrix available at the following address: https://www.programmes.uliege.be/cocoon/20182019/formations/descr/A2UCON01.html
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prerequisites:
MECA0012-5 Solid mechanics
MECA0001-1 Mechanics of materials
Co-requisites:
N/A
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Part of the course is thought ex cathedra by the professors.
Practical exercices will by made by ou with the assistant.
Quiz will be organised.
The students will work in small groups on the project, with the help of professors and assistants. each group will present his project in a written report that contains the drawings for execution.
The project will then be constructed full scale.
The way courses are organized might be reviewed according to the sanitary crisis.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face to face course
It is mandatory to attend the course, the exercices as well as the practical realisation of the project.
A student who has not participated in these activities and / or who has not submitted the expected report within the prescribed deadlines or in the prescribed forms will receive a mark "A" (except if a specific justification is provided and accepted by the professors which will analyse the justificiation with equity).
This course is organised in the first quadrimester (Tuesday PM).
The design of the structure will require some additional time out of the class hours.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Recommended or required readings
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
The final mark will be formed on the basis of:
- a mark out of 20 for the results of the interviews for the year (carried out with closed book);
- a mark out of 20 for the results of the written report evaluation.
The final final score is obtained by the cubic root of the product of the square of the first note by the second.
In the second session, the same rules persist. Those who would have obtained a score of less than 10/20 for the written report will have the opportunity to submit a new report. The others could be partially exempted.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
This course is given on Tuesday PM during the first quadrimester.
The realisation of the project will occur on January 21-22, 2021 in Marche-en-Famenne.
