Learning unit contents
The course introduces...
- the place of grammar within linguistics and language teaching,
- the different kinds of grammar that are recognized and that can be used,
- the role of grammar in teaching and learning a language,
- the status of implicit and explicit grammar, in particular in the context of learning using communicative and immersion methods,
- the issue of selection, (spiral) progression, (interlanguage) assimilation of grammatical content,
- the structures and processes for teaching grammar in class in inductive logic and action-oriented.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The participants will be able to approach grammar notion critically, to connect it coherently with their teaching French as a foreign and second language, to prepare and create appropriate and effective lessons in specific contexts.
Upon completion of the course students should be able to :
- distinguish the linguistic, didactic and acquisitionist theories of the grammar of a foreign language
- criticize and exploit the methodological options and the grammar reference tools available
- elaborate lesson plan
- create exercises and tasks to conceptualize grammatical rules from authentic documents
- define linguistic, discursive and cultural objectives
- handle all macro-skills
- choose authentic and pertinent documents
- set up activities according to different stages
- prepare a grammar corpus.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Some knowledge and/or experience in linguistics and/or teaching, as well as strong knowledge of French normative grammar.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Students must actively participate in the course and perform different tasks remotely (flipped classroom) which are then the subject of face-to-face critical discussions. Several MOOC sequences "Moi, prof de FLE" will also be exploited.
The participants are expected to prepare a grammar lesson, present it and submit a written report.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
If the health situation no longer allows the organization of face-to-face courses, the lessons will be provided online (videoconference) at the scheduled times. The sessions will be recorded and posted on MyULiège.
People who have difficulties in following the videoconference courses (no computer, no correct internet connection, no workspace at their home ...) are invited to let me know as soon as possible.
All course materials will be made available on eCampus.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Continuous assessment: Yes/No course participation ; follow-up of distance learning (one-off tasks online)
Assessment of the written report (40%) and oral presentation (20%)
