The course includes two parts:
- new buildings
- exisiting buildings
The details of the pedagogical commitment are given separately for both parts.
Part 1 : Buildings to be built
Materials, envelope, ventilation, heating and cooling systems, hot domestic water, artificial lighting, the use of renewable energy in buildings, economic-technical approach (residential and tertiary).
The course revolves around the various parameters necessary for carrying out the energy balance of a new house: materials, envelope, ventilation, heating and cooling systems, domestic hot water, artificial lighting, use of renewable energies in buildings. .. It also offers a technico-economic approach (residential and tertiary).
Part 2 : Existing buildings
Description of the teaching Unit:
The course aims at providing the background required to understand and calculate the energy balance of an existing building. The approaches available to assess the different components of the energy balance are provided.
Table of contents:
Performance requirements of a building; monitoring and diagnosis methods; calculation and calibration methods. The course builds upon a real building of which the energy balance is progressively avaluated all along the different lessons.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Part 1 : Buildings to be built
At the end of this course, the student will be able to carry out an energy balance of a building, and to understand the importance of their various parameters. He/she will be able to be critical in the face of the various parameters which are taken into account in this assessment, and in the face of the comparison of the results resulting from different models.
Part 2 : Existing buildings
At the end of the course, the student is able to understand the concept of energy balance of an existing building and to realize it on a specific case using the methods presented during the lessons.

Lectures (theory) and guided practical work sessions, alternately.
Part 2 : Existing buildings
The course combines the presentation of basic concepts and evaluation methods and their application on a real building case which serves as a "red line" for the contents of the course. It also includes an introduction to the use of simulation programs.

Part 2 : Existing buildings
The cours is given face-to-face to the students. In case of continuation of the sanitary crisis during spring 2021 which would maintain the University in red code, the course will be given remotelyusing the LifeSize platform.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Part 1 : Buildings to be built
If the University adopts a "code orange", the courses will be given according to the institutional prescriptions. In the event of a "red code", the courses will be exclusively given (live) by LifeSize or Blackboard Collaborate, recorded, and deposited as podcasts on the MyULiège and e-campus platforms.
Part 2 : Existing buildings
In case of continuation of the sanitary crisis during spring 2021 which would maintain the University in red code, the course will be given remotelyusing the LifeSize platform.
In case of ontinuation of the sanitary crisis during spring 2021, the examination will be organized on-line using the LifeSize platform.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Common examination for both parts of the course
Part 1 : Buildings to be built
The overall assessment relates to the execution of a practical work (1/3 of the points) and to the success of an oral exam (2/3 of the points). The practical work involves carrying out an assessment of a single-family house using the EPB software (delivering theoretical energy consumption and CO2 emissions). The results are then compared with those from the modeling of the same house on the TOTEM online software (energy consumption in use and results of the "global warming" indicator). Students must present their results in groups during the last session. The oral exam includes a question on the practical work carried out (per student), and two questions on the theoretical material.
In the case of distance learning under a red code for at least half of the periods scheduled in the schedule, the final score will be established by giving increased importance to practical work (rising to 50% of the overall score), vis-à-vis the exam (rising to 50% of the overall rating). The oral exam will then include a question on the practical work, followed by a question on the theoretical material (a second question may be asked to the student in the event of inadequacy in the first question).

Additional information:
Oral exam common with the part devoted to new buidlings. The total evaluation includes 3 questions the student presents without preparation.
