All year long, with partial in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
After a brief introduction explaining the reasons for a course of communication in the biomedical field, the main forms of oral ("flash" presentation, "long" presentation), written (article, thesis) and mixed (poster) scientific communication are discussed in details. Both the structure and content of each form of communication are discussed in depth. A particular attention is paid to the advices as well as to the means used to achieve effective, precise and structured written and oral communication that meets international standards.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students must be able to
- to produce a precise and structured powerpoint support for an oral presentation and to present this latter in French (or in English).
- to create, on the basis of results extracted from a scientific article, a poster and to defend this latter in English.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- The students must know how to use the basic functions of Word or a related software and be able to write a structured text in French and in English.
- The student must know how to use the basic functions of PowerPoint or a related software.
- The student must have followed a prior scientific schoolarship in order to understand the results as well as the basic techniques used in a scientific article.
- The student must have taken English courses beforehand.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
-Théorical: ex-cathedra course in English (mainly)
-Practical: students are invited to
- perform in English, on the basis of a scientific article, a poster and defend this latter.
- create a "flash" oral presentation in French or English and present this latter in front of the other students. The goal is to gain some experience in both types of presentation (oral and written). During these activities, the students are, of course, supervised and advised.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
at the University (theorical and practical)
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
Given the health context:
- practical work will be given by half a class at a time.
- For the flash presentation (first part of the exam), the audience will be reduced and adapted to the class room.
- The poster (second part of the exam) will be presented by each student in front of the teacher alone (and not in front of the entire class).
Recommended or required readings
The slides and associated comments are provided before the first course (Powerpoint file). This file is uploaded to MyUlg.
Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
-Practical work: the students will be evaluated on
- their ability to find a subject, process it scientifically and achieve a precise and structured Powerpoint support for a "flash" presentation (oral) (25% of the final mark)
- their ability to present orally in a dynamic manner and in front of an audience the Powerpoint support made beforehand. French or English may be used (25% of the final score).
- their ability to distinguish "essential" results from a scientific article and to produce a poster in English with them (25% of the final grade).
These first three parts will be dispensatory * Notes will be communicated globally no later than the last day before the Christmas holidays.
(Regulation of the evaluations: Article 46 §1 Queries may be organized by the teachers according to any modalities established by the faculty §2 These interrogations may have dispensatory value. They can not relate to the whole subject matter or deprive the student of full law at both exam sessions.)
-Exams (in January, according to the exam schedule)
- their ability to present a scientific poster in English and to answer in English the questions relating to the presented results (25% of the final grade).
- Exempt student: see previous point
- Non-Exempt Student: The ability to present a scientific poster in English and to answer questions in english about the presented results will be evaluated. The first 3 points relating to the flash presentation and poster (see above) will, of course, also be evaluated.
Work placement(s)
None
