Learning unit contents
The course will address documentary film history from the 1920's to the present and will introduce the students to the technical, aesthetical and political aspects of documentary filmmaking. How to film "reality"? What are the different types of documentary films? How to represent the "other"? To what extend does a documentary film refer to the social and political context of its time? What are the basic ingredients that foster the reading of a film in a "documentary perspective" (Odin)?
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The students will acquire basic knowledge on documentary film history and develop analytical skills (historical and sociocritical) in the field of documentary cinema.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will rely on the watching and the analysis of documentary films. The analysis will be developped in class through discussions with the sutdents. Each session will end with a q&a on the texts (see "required readings").

Every session will be videorecorded and downloadable via the MyULiège platform ("podcasts" tab).
In accordance with the decisions made by the federal and academic authorities, each session will be interrupted every 50 minutes in order to achieve the 10 minutes compulsory ventilation of the room.
Recommended or required readings
One week priori to each session, a text will be made available to the students via MyULg (required reading).
