Organisation and examination

Teaching in the second semester

Schedule

Schedule online

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course presents the use of spectral techniques (UV-Visible, Fluorescence, Dichroïsme, NMR, infra-red) in order to identify and quantify molecules.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of this course is to give the students the basic in analytical spectroscopy

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Course of Phisics, general ionorganic and organic chemistry of the 1st Bloc.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

2 practicals of 4hr each
The presence at the practicals is mandatory. Any absence must be justified by a sick note. Access to the exam will not be granted to students with unjustified absences for the practials or who have not submitted a practical report.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

2h per week during 8 weeks in the second quadrimester

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

During the most delicate periods of the health crisis, the theoretical course and the exercise sessions will be offered completely online in the form of live videoconferences or pre-recorded capsules.
Practices will be kept in person as much as possible, under optimal security conditions.
The exam is held in person, unless prohibited by the authorities. In this extreme case, the exam would then be organized online either via the eCampus platform or using other tools which will be communicated later.

Recommended or required readings

Lectures slides will be made available (ppt format)

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

written exam ( open-ended questions )

- Remote

written exam ( open-ended questions )

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

In the case of the written face-to-face exam, it will be divided into 2 parts: Theory (30 min) and then exercises (2 hrs 30 mins).
Theory Questions will type "open questions" in order to assess your understanding
You will be able to have your course notes. By "course notes" we mean:
For the theory part: 3 double-sided pages, A4 format, handwritten, with your personal summary, identified on each side by your name, first name and ULG-ID number.
For the exercises part: 1 double-sided page, A4 format, handwritten, with your personal summary, identified on each side by your name, first name and ULG-ID number.
You will also need to have the spectroscopic tables (IR / MS / NMR) available on eCampus, printed, and identified on each side by your name, surname and ULG-ID number. No personal notes will be allowed on the spectroscopic tables.

The final note will be calculated by the following way : 70% for the written exam 30% for the practical report.
