Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course reviews the fundamental principles used in drug design. It tries to explain how were found, and how are still selected today, the new chemical entities developed as new therapeutic agents. The course tries to establish a link between the chemical structure of a drug and its biological activity. The following parts are examined : structural modifications of known active substances; structure-activity relationships; definition of a pharmacophore, of a prodrug, concept of bioisosterism, importance of the stereochemistry, drug-receptor interaction.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of the course is the presentation of the traditional and innovative concepts used in drug design. This course also aims at explaining to the students that the pharmacological and therapeutic activity of a medicinal product is tightly related to its chemical structure. Since most of the drugs found on the market are issued from organic synthesis, this course also allows to demonstrate one of the multiple valorisation possibilities of organic chemistry.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

There is no practical work associated to this course.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

In accordance with the students, who are usually on a training course during the second semester, the lessons are traditionally given on afternoon per week, from 14h00 to 15h30 and from 15h45 to 17h15 (february-march) during five weeks.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

According to the evolution of the health situation, live courses could be replaced by online courses.
Likewise, the written live examination could be replaced by oral online examination.

Recommended or required readings

Written notes are distributed to the students during the first lesson.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred remote

Additional information:

Taking into account thee health context, the examination will be done at a distance in the form of an oral exam consisting of a discussion on a scientific article devoted to medicinal chemistry distributed to the students during the last lesson.
