Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course makes the most of the skills gathered with the Biology course of the first year. It mostly scrutinizes organization of the flowering plants and brings notions of plant physiology then goes thoroughly into description of the most important taxonomical groups of the traditional plant biology.

Phytogeography

Using the concepts developed in the botany course, the phytogeography course adresses to the various aspects of the distribution of plant organisms. The first part examines from a theoretical point of view the phenomena of abundance distribution, the co-existence mechanisms, the colonisation, the problem of the invasive species and how occurs speciation. The second part explalns the basis of the vegetation classification systems. The third part describes the characteristics of the vegetation types, their conditioning factors et the specific properties of their plants

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To lead to a reasonably good knowledge of terrestrial plant organization, botanical diversity and plant formations. To introduce to the methods and the vocabulary of botany.

Phytogeography

To cope with the main concepts of phytogeography

This course is the continuation of the course Biologie végétale - botanique. Thorough French knowledge

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory is exposed in a series of lessons largely open to the questions of the students. Workshops and field works are part and parcel of the course. They illustrate concepts exposed during lectures and represent another useful way of apprehending the contents of the course. They also make it possible for students to assess their understanding of theoretical issues and give them opportunities to ask questions or engage in a dialogue with the holder or the assistants.
Living material is dissected and examined using binocular lens or microscope, and permanent microscope preparations are studied. These manipulations aim at introducing to objective observation, drawing and determination.
A visit of the National Botanical Garden demonstrates the tremendous variety of life forms and the adaptations to the climates.

Phytogeography

The theoretical lessons are followed by a field trip allowing the discovery of some vegetations and the understanding of the challenge of their conservation

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face

Botany

Face-to-face

Phytogeography

Face-to-face, mandatory

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

According to the colour of the code defining the status of the health crisis, a part or all the courses could be given remotely through one of the institutional tools.

Recommended or required readings

Written notes are available  but students are invited to take their own notes during the lectures.
Reference work: Biology of plants, by P. H. Raven, R. F. Evert & S. E. Eichhorn, W. H. Freeman and Company/Worth Publishers, New York, 1999 (several copies of the French translation of this book by J. Bouharmont could be consulted in ULg libraries "Bibliothèque Interfacultaire" on the Sart Tilman campus and little library of the Institue of Zoology)

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

The practical exam consists of the analysis of a microscopal preparation and the interpretation of organisms.
The exam on theory consists of three questions. Students have time to prepare, then they are invited to present their conclusions for about 20 min.
Successful completion of the course requires the completion of each of the exams, practical and theory.
According to the colour of the code defining the status of the health crisis, the exam could proceed remotely.
