Schedule

Schedule online

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course provides a summary of the Plant & Animal Biology courses on the schedule of blocs 1 & 2 of the studies of Bachelor in Biology. The aim is to provide basic knowledge to students who followed a different cursus so that they are able to understand the other Biology courses on their program.

Animal

The course presents the major systematic groups of animals considered in terms of evolution, phylogeny and biodiversity. The lecture is focused on compared anatomy, functional adaptations, evolutionary aspects and interactions with the environment.

Plant Biology

The course consists in two main parts.
Part one is based on 3 keywords (the title of the course) : 'Biology', 'Plant', 'Pluricellular'. These words are used as a guideline to explain the specific traits of plant cells, tissues, and organs. Functional aspects are included such as photosynthesis. Part two describes important groups such as algae, mosses, ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Special emphasis is laid on evolutionary aspects of vegetative organisms and reproduction.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge in Biology, so that students who are registered in Master BBMC or BOE but have a transition program to follow can understand the complementary courses.

Animal

Introduction to the methods and scientific vocabulary of biology
Concepts of evolution and animal phylogeny
Overview of animal diversity

Plant Biology

The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in plant biology, so that students can understand the course of Plant Physiology that is on their schedule for the second quadrimestre.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures and practicals

Animal

3 practical courses. The following topics will be studied : Annelids (earthworm) ; Arthropods ; Biodiversity (museum).

Plant Biology

Courses are given ex cathedra.
Practicals are organised in 4 thematic half-days on plant cell, photosynthesis, plant anatomy and reproduction.
For the fist time this year, a "hunt" is organized with the QuoVidi application (http://www.bota.quovidi.xyz/). Students receive "quests" and have to upload pictures of some botanical stuctures. The aim is that students learn organography by an enjoyable way.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face teaching if the number of students and the evolution of the pandemic allow it (schedule below).
Adaptations  to the Covid situation are described in each partim.

Animal

Face-to-face teaching if the evolution of the pandemic allows it. If not, courses could be given remotely.

Plant Biology

Face-to-face lectures will take place as long as possible. In case some students must stay home or if teaching has to occur remotely, lessons will be given on Lifesize platform, according to the schedule. Podcasts, slides and notes are also available.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Seach each partim. for details

Animal

Courses could be given remotely according to the recommendations linked to the Covid crisis. And in this case, practical courses could be suppressed.

Plant Biology

From the 26th of october, courses will be given remotely (Lifesize). Slides, notes and podcasts will also be available.
Practicals making use of microscopes will be replaced by on line exercices using imaging platforms.

Recommended or required readings

See each partim.

Animal

Powerpoint slides.

Plant Biology

Slides, notes and podcasts can be downloaded from eCampus. Books are recommended but not compulsory. A few of them can be obtained from the teacher.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

The final note is the mean of the cotations obtained in the 'Plant' and 'Animal' parts, providing that a minimum of 8/20 has been obtained in each part.

Animal

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

Face-to-face oral examination if the evolution of the pandemic allows it. If not, oral examination could be organized by visioconference (lifesize).

Plant Biology

Any session :

- In-person

oral exam

- Remote

oral exam

- If evaluation in "hybrid"

preferred in-person

Additional information:

Oral examination for the theoritical course. If face-to-face exams are not authorized in January 2021, they will take place on line (Lifesize platform).
Practicals are evaluated based on homeworks that students have to upload on eCampus. Practicals are taken into account for 20% of the final note but this can be reevaluated according to the exceptional situation of this year.
For september session, oral face-to-face exams will take place if possible. If not, oral exams will happen remotely, via Collaborate eCampus platform.
