Learning unit contents

It is a seminar of methodology in human sciences, applied to the architecture and the production of the territory. It aims to introduce students to research methods and tools specific to the humanities and social sciences.
It will firstly be a question of reviewing various tools (bibliography, databases, journals ...) to initiate a research. The production of socio-anthropological data (survey, immersion, interviews, sources, observation, mapping) will then be discussed. The formulation of a relevant research question is a major objective of the seminar.
The seminar articulates theoretical research (bibliography, spatial approaches, meeting of resource persons ...) and field research (spatial readings, observations, interviews ...). It is also focused on finding graphical transcripts that report observations and analyzes. The goal is to explore innovative graphical tools as tools for transcription, analysis and communication.
Students have the opportunity to apply the steps taken in the seminar to their TFE. This seminar is therefore primarily intended for students wishing to do a project related to spatial issues related to human and social sciences. The second quadrimester mainly concerns second-level approaches.
The humanities and social sciences courses aim more specifically to allow the student to study the components of the cultural, social and economic context in order to integrate these parameters in the reformulation of a question asked, in the elaboration of a spatial synthesis, in the emergence of significant hypotheses.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the seminar, the student will be able to:
- to formulate a relevant research question, to identify the areas concerned, and to build a first state of theoretical art - to use the basic tools in acquiring and processing data and sources - to articulate the tools of the architect and the territory with the methodologies specific to the human and social sciences
These learning outcomes enable the student to develop the skills listed in the faculty's competency framework by guiding him / her more specifically in the development of the "instructing an architectural question" skill. Some lessons are also focused on the development of the "interact with all actors" competency.

Organisational adjustments related to the current health context

Le cours est donné à distance, sous forme d'exposé, ou d'échanges individueles ou collectifs avec les étudiants sur base des travaux déposés sur e-campus.

Recommended or required readings

Notes and bibliographical references are provided during the seminar.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

The assessment takes into account the student's ability to succeed in every stage of the research, the ability to work effectively in a group, the ability to take into account the work carried out in terms of a written and graphic document and oral communication. This assessment involves the student's active presence at all sessions.
