Learning unit contents
In the architecture project workshops, light is not the main objective.
However light is - a material for some, a tool for others - indispensable for the architect who designs and constructs. Without light there is no space, no use.
An opening in a wall, - light, day, view, sound, heat/cold - constitute a relationship between the outside and the inside (even public/private).
The ways in which this opening can be designed makes the space on the other side of the wall visible, understandable, and appropriable.
Louis Kahn wrote: 'structure makes light'.
The workshop 'Light 2' envisages natural light on three levels: captured, distributed and appropriated for use.
Based on specific typologies of spaces, students are asked to observe the distribution of light (quantity and quality) which results.
The model is a vital tool in this type of experimentation. Observations (sensory appreciation and lighting) are informed and illustrated through photographic reportage and graphic representation (depending on the choices the student makes).
Specific software will be used in order to compare their relevance with that of other tools.
