Learning unit contents
The BIM Modelling teaching unit fall within the Study and Representation of Space and Form teaching and research field (DER).
The 'Study and Representation of Space and Form' unit brings together teaching and research in complementary fields relating to the study and representation of space and the forms which make it up. The DER courses provide knowledge and practice relating to means of expression (writing and graphic construction of space) and to digital culture.
This BIM course is about 'digital culture' and aim to give students the means of better understanding how to use digital tools - in general - and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - in particular as used in the field of architecture. Students will learn to take a more comprehensive view of the possibilities which digital tools offer to architects at all stages of developing an architectural project.
This course focus especially on takling BIM modeling issues and BIM practices as per the ISO 19650 normalisation.
This classe address BIM as a support for the design activity of an architectural project.
It does not, therefore, consist of training students in so-called 'client' software, often used in architectural offices, but rather consists of understanding the mechanisms by which a wider range of tools operate. This will give them the ability to build their own software environment according to their needs.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Understand :
- Develop a global understanding of the issus of computation in architecture today
- Understand BIM methodologies and best practices
Analyse:
- Being able to set up a BIM model according to specific project requirements
- Being able to deploy basic modeling skills according to project requirements
- Being able to document and communicate a project through a BIM model
- Being able to troubleshoot new situations or new problems
- Evaluate: students should be able to self-assess and self-criticise on the basis of the results on the screen. Make a relevant creative choice, adapt to the situation, develop, develop a graphic process.
- apply the procedures set out in theory classes and practice in the workshop with the aim of presenting a rich, individual piece of work.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
In order to begin this teaching unit, students must have already achieved the following credits:
- ARCH0234-1 : CAO et modélisation tridimensionnelle
- ARCH0241-2 : Projet d'architecture
- ARCH0213-1 : Construction 2
We accept Erasmus students.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course consists of 12 sessions, each one organised as follow :
- 1 hour class for theory
- 2 hours of practice in lab.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
The course is taught in French. Presence in class is compulsory.
ECampus is the place where students can find information on the exercises to be conducted, the theory classes, videos, articles to read as well as all information required for the smooth operation of the teaching unit.
Organisational adjustments related to the current health context
>> Course modality in "yellow " COVID context:
Theoretical courses are given in synchronous distance via ecampus-collaborate. Course materials (and recordings when possible) are available on ecampus. The material required for each TP session is given in advance. TP sessions take place in hybrid presence / distance via ecampus-collaborate and in a computer laboratory.
Course evaluation in "yellow " COVID context:
- Continuous evaluation of TP, the deliverables are sent through ecampus
- Continuous evaluation of theoretical knowledge with "quizzes" available on ecampus
>> Course details for a "code orange" health situation:
The course modalities are the same as in "yellow code", except for the hybrid presence / distance TP sessions, where the groups in attendance go from 15 students to 5 students.
The evaluation in "orange " COVID context is the same as for the "yellow" one.

Assessment methods and criteria
Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.
Continuous assessment will take place. Attitude in the practical workshop and the quality of student's approach will be taken into account as well as the results achieved.
An absence number less than 50% of the time for the practical part leads to a score equal to zero, even if the student submits his work.
