Learning unit contents

This course aims at developing the necessary skills to conduct ethnographic fieldwork based on participant observation and complementary tools using ethnographic examples and exercises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will have a broader understanding of the different stages and components of anthropological research: from adopting a reflective stance to the immersive approach, from the construction of the subject in the field to developing a problem, from ethnographic description to documented and argued writing. They will be introduced to the requirements of participant observation and various methodological tools.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Readings, exercises, discussions, ethnographic fieldwork.  

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

In-class and remote teaching.
In-class teaching for one group of students while the other will follow remotely (classes will be broadcast live and will be recorded) according to the following schedule:
- Group A: surnames from A to K (odd weeks)
- Group B: surnames from L to Z (even weeks)

- 3 intermediate works  (instructions and criteria in "classe material" and "news" on myuliege) during the quadrimester to be sent to elodie.razy@uliege.be reduced to 2 intermediate jobs (the 3rd intermediate work is deleted) : 50%
- 1 final work (instructions and criteria in "class material" on myuliege) done at home (with possible fieldwok adjustments) to be sent on 20/01/2020 (1st exam session) or 20/08/2020 (2nd session) to elodie.razy@uliege.be before midnight : 50%

Adatpation of the evaluation: 4 intermediate works (instead of 5), 50%, to be submitted on e-campus and a final work (50%) also to be submitted on e-campus by January 22nd at 6pm.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Additional information:

Each teacher will specify the modalities and criteria for assessment during the first lesson.
The final grade is an average of the grades obtained during the term (50%) and the final work (50%).
