Learning unit contents

The entomology course is subdivided into two distinct parts: (A) Biology and morphology of insects and (B) Follow-up of entomological experiments. The first part is subdivided into a theoretical part dealing with the biology of insects via an online course and a practical part organized by means of practical work sessions during which the student will learn to manipulate an identification key of the main insect families from Europe. The second part will consist in the realization of short scientific experiments on subjects currently developed by the functional and evolutionary entomology laboratory. This will involve, for example, understanding the impact of global warming on the biology of natural enemies used in biological control, or understanding the nutrition of edible insect species using agronomic and industrial co-products.

Entomology

The course Biodiversity of the Animal Kingdom belongs to the Zoology module (9 ECTS). This module includes 4 courses, presented along the year as theoretical courses (Th) or laboratory classes (TP) :
§ Course « Biodiversity and Animal Kingdom » (Th et TP) - 3 ECTS
§ Course « Basic concepts in Zoology » (Th) - 2 ECTS.
§ Course « Ethology » (Th) - 2 ECTS.
§ Course « Entomology » (Th et TP) - 2 ECTS
The course of omology represents 2 ECTS. It will be given on lie (ecampus) and in the laboratory during practical classes.
The course presents the biology and ecology of insects as well as morphology and systematics of insects.

Entomology: in-depth study

This entomology course completes the first part devoted to the biology and morphology of insects. It is a deepening of the study of the entomofauna in direct connection with agriculture in a concept of functional diversity. In a first part, the biology, ecology and systematics of harmful and useful insects in agro-ecosystems will be developed based on theoretical courses and practical work sessions during which the student will learn to handle identification keys of the main families of pests and beneficials in agriculture. The second part will consist in the realization of short scientific experiments on subjects currently developed by the functional and evolutionary entomology laboratory. This will involve, for example, the understanding of the impact of global warming on the biology of natural enemies used in biological control, or the understanding of the nutrition of edible insect species using agronomic and industrial co-products.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Contribute to basic training by providing students with disciplinary and technical skills related to entomology and the classification of living organisms. The student will also learn about current issues related to entomology and agricultural production. Through the experimental modules, the student will develop skills in collecting data, setting up experiments and interpreting results.
At the end of the course, the student must be able:
* Identify about 15 orders and 100 insect families using an identification key
* To demonstrate sufficient knowledge of insect biology
* Collect and interpret scientific and technical information in an unfamiliar environment
* Develop skills in group management and project management
* Communicate in a useful and effective way with partners and formally in a scientific context

Entomology

Contribute to providing basic training in the student disciplinary skills and techniques in entomology and classification of living.

At the end of the course, students should be able to identify about 15 orders and 100 families of insects using a key to identify and demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the biology of insects.

Entomology: in-depth study

Contribute to the training by providing the student with disciplinary and technical skills related to entomology applied to agriculture. The student will learn about current issues related to pests and beneficials in crops. Through the experimental modules, the student will develop skills in collecting data, setting up experiments and interpreting results. At the end of the course, the student must be able to: - Identify the major groups of pests but also entomophagous, pollinator and decomposing beneficals using identification keys; - To demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the biology of insects in agrosystems; - Collect and interpret scientific and technical information in an unfamiliar environment; - Develop skills in group management and project management; - Communicate in a useful and effective way with partners and formally in a scientific context.

Entomology

There is a syllabus provided. It is also provided online via ecampus.

Assessment methods and criteria

Ø Insect biology (/4)
Ø Identifications of insectes (/4)
Ø Insect collection by group and according to different environmants (/6)
Ø Report on experiments (/6)

Entomology

Each course belonging to the integrated module of Zoology will be evaluated during the academic year with a mark out of 20. Scores for the four courses will be weighted within the integrated module of Zoology according to the ECTS allocated for each course.
The course "Entomology" will have 4 evaluations on four parts which compose it, for a total of 20:
Ø Insect Biology (/ 6)
Ø Insects identifications (/ 6)
Ø Insect collection (/ 6)
Ø Laboratory evaluations (/ 2)
All rules associated to the evluation of this course are presented to the students in the auditorium and are placed on ecampus during the entire academic year.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Entomology

The practical works of entomology were virtualized and weekly proposed on ecampus to allow the discovery of the systematic at family level, order by order. The organization of the insect collection has been changed. Individual work has been replaced by work by a group of three students. The instructions have been adapted by reducing (1) the number of insects per person and (2) the restrictions in terms of diversity to be presented. A virtual insect box has been set up with a coaching to guide the identification of insects to be carried out.

Assessment subjects

Entomology

These are the biology and ecology of insects, the morphology and systematics of insects.

Assessment methods

Entomology

The oral examination face to face based on the physical collection of insects is replaced by an oral examination by videoconference based on the virtual insect box.
The distribution of exam scores is adapted as follows: Ø Insect Biology and recognition during oral exam (/12)

Ø Insect virtual collection (/6)
Ø Evaluations during pratical works before homestay (/2)

Details for the oral exam: It will be organized online on collaborate and will consist of a discussion. No preparation time is planned. The virtual insect box (BIV) created on the google drive is necessary. The general photo of the BIV will be opened in shared screen mode. You will be invited to join a virtual room, on the day and time of the exam, via a link which will be provided on ecampus and myulg. Your teacher will pick up a student to move him / her to another private exam room to take the exam. This exam should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. When the waiting room is empty, the Professor will end the series of examinations. The oral questions will target (1) aspects of identification criteria on the 20 insects presented by each BIV student and (2) elements of biology - ecology on the 60 insects of the BIV as well as the content of the theoretical course posted online. In case of short disconnection to collaborate, reconnect as soon as possible. If you are disconnected from the exam room, your teacher will wait 3 minutes. If you are not reconnected, it will go to the next student. He will continue your exam once you are visible in the waiting room. If the Internet connection is lost, then please send a message (SMS only) to the number 0473 76 28 32. Your Professor will call you at a date of his choice. No call can be made there.
