Learning unit contents

The course includes 9 main chapters, all of them including the equine species:

  • Diseases of the locomotor system
  • Diseases of the digestive and hepato-biliary system
  • Diseases of the respiratory system
  • Diseases of the nervous system
  • Diseases of the cardiovascular system
  • Diseases of the reproductive system
  • Diseases of the foal
  • Management of cutaneous masses
  • Clinical nutrition

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course describes the diseases most frequently encountered in equids. Using a problem-based approach, a differential diagnosis of the problem will be given. Therefore, the diseases will be described, with a special emphasis on the clinical signs, the risk factors, the diagnostic methods, the prognosis, and the treatment. A specific chapter will be devoted to medical imaging of the locomotor system, abdomen, thorax and head. Basic concepts of clinical nutrition and genetic counselling will be included in several chapiters.

Lectures, flipped classrooms, resolution of clinical cases in lectures room.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This theoretical course does not contain seminars or workshops but is largely illustrated by slides and videos of clinical cases and by the participation, during the block 2, to the equine clinic.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation is organised as a written examination including multiple choice questions (MCQs) and open assay questions.
The examination will consist of two distinct parts: one on the chapter "Diseases of the locomotor system" (including imaging of the locomotor system), and the other on the other chapters. The weighting of the final mark of the exam will be divided up to 20% on the first part and 80% on the second part. The success of the two parts (set at 10/20) conditions the acquisition of the credits of this teaching unit. In case of failure in one of the two parts, the final score will be the score obtained in this part without weighting with the other note.
In case of failure, the student will be questioned, in the second session, only on the part in which he failed, and his mark will be calculated taking into account the mark obtained in the first session for the successful part. From the academic year 2019-2020, this will no more be the case from one academic year to another.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Lectures that have not been given are replaced by commented power points or podcasts (available on eCampus), and question-and-answer or clincal cases sessions organized in the form of a virtual classes (viseoconferences).

Assessment subjects

Given the learning difficulties caused by the Covid crisis, the chapters on dystocia and neonatology are not included in the evaluation this year. These subjects will nevertheless be made available (on eCampus) to students who wish to deepen these subjects later.
The details of the chapters to be evaluated in 2019-2020 and the materials made available to students to acquire them are available on eCampus.

Assessment methods

The assessment will be done using a written exam on eCampus. 
As the student will potentially have access to different sources of information (course material, internet, reference books, etc.), the questions asked will require more reflection and analysis, possibly using clinical vignettes, rather than a simple restitution of the material.
For the rest, the evaluation methods set for 2019-2020 remain applicable.
