Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course will address the different types of lesions, their pathogeny, propagation and nomenclature, together with the underlying causes, in domestic animals.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of the general pathology course is to make the student familiar with the morphological and functional alterations underlying clinical diseases. In particular, the emphasis will be put on the vocabulary used to describe lesions and the lesional pathogeny.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Courses of histology, anatomy and physiology given during the first three years of veterinary education.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course includes two parts:
- The theoretical course of general pathology
- Paraclinical exercises, in part in amphitheatre, in part in the necropsy room
Paraclinical exercises consist of four lessons of 90 minutes. The first lesson is given in large groups in amphitheatre and describes the general method of necropsy. The next three lessons are given in smaller groups and consist in practicing concepts learned during the first lesson and in building a lesional diagnosis as learned in the theoretical course.
Recommended or required readings
Power point course notes: eCampus
Suggested reference books:
- Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th edition. Robbins & Cotran, Eds. Saunders, 2010.
- Pathologic Basis of Veterinary Disease, 5th edition. Zachary & McGavin, Eds Mosby, 2012
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation takes the form of an oral examination (15 minutes) with a preparation phase (30 minutes) for the theoretical part. The practical part of the exam consists in an oral examination (5 minutes) after preparation (5 minutes). A different person evaluates each part of the exam (theory and practice). The first part of the exam consists of two synthesis questions (30 points each) and five definitions (10 points). The second part of the exam deals with the interpretation and the building of an adequate lesional diagnosis based on three gross pictures (10 points each, i.e. 30 points for this part of the exam). The final, global, is considered indivisible. A final mark <35/70 for the theoretical part or <15/30 for the practical part means the student will have to resit the examination for both parts of the course (theory and practical work). In this last case, the final mark of the exam corresponds to that of the failed part.
Evaluation criteria are the same for both the first and second exam periods.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The attendance to paraclinical exercises is mandatory. In the case of an absence not justified by a medical certificate, the student will not be admitted to the first examination period.
The attendance to practical works is also mandatory for students which attended the course the year before and failed to get the credits.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the Aug-Sept 2020 session
Assessment subjects
As the theoretical course and practical work are given entirely in the first term, the learning method will not be changed.
Assessment methods
The general pathology exam will be organized in 2 tests given the same day. These exams will take place online, unless the release of containment allows the organization of the face-to-face exam on the scheduled date. The first, relating to theoretical teaching, will consist of a 30-minute preparation on 3 questions drawn by lot. You will have a word document where you can detail each question. You will then defend your preparations orally, having taken care to send them beforehand via the word document. The second, on photo analysis, will be organized in the form of an oral. It will focus on the analysis of 3 photos, with a preparation of 10 minutes (word document provided), followed by an oral presentation with the sending of the preparation document in word form beforehand.
The rest of the evaluation criteria remain the same as in the first session (condition for success, etc.).
The chosen online platform is ecampus, where the collaborate program has been installed, with 3 virtual classes, a preparation class, a "theory" class and a "photos" class. A technical test will be offered by the assistant before the exam, you will be contacted by email.
You are also asked to make sure for the day of the exam, to have internet access with a connection allowing a video interview.
You are imperatively requested to communicate as soon as possible a contact telephone number, where it will be possible to reach you in the event of an emergency concerning your examination. Send your numbers to the following email address: adrienne.dernier@uliège.be and make sure you get an acknowledgment of receipt of your email.
