Learning unit contents

Intermediary metabolism of proteins, polysaccharides, lipids and nucleic acids is described, as well as their intrinsic and extrinsic regulations. Metabolism adaptations are also studied at the tissue and organism level. A specific chapter deals with the metabolism of the ruminants.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the programme, the students will understand how the metabolism of the organism and the different tissues works. Thus, the students will be ready to understand pathological and clinical Biochemistry/Biology as well as Nutrition courses which are presented in masters.

Biochemistry I, bloc 2, FMV, ULg.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Five seminars are organized to help students to understand the theory and resolve problems in relation with the theory. They are mandatory (see below under "evaluation"), except for students who must present a second time the course and the evaluation, and who were present at all 5 seminars the year before. However, for these specific students, it is still possible to follow the seminars a second time if they write an email to S. Schurmans at the beginning of the quadrimestre (February).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The courses and the seminars take place from March to April. The time schedules of courses and seminars are available at the Students' Office and on the website of the faculty.

Recommended or required readings

The notes are available on eCampus on the web site of the University. The reference book is the "Lehninger: Principles of Biochemistry, Fifth edition", edited in 2008, by David L. Nelson Michael M. Cox, Publisher: W.H. Freeman. This book is available at the library of the faculty and in the Department of Biochemistry.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation at the first and second sessions (May and August) is organized as a 90 min written examination: open questions with short answer as well as true/false propositions covering all courses and seminars.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Slides and written comments/texts for the theory and the practicals are available sur eCampus. Forums for each chapter of the theory and each practical have also been created on eCampus.

Assessment subjects

The 14 chapters of the theory (slides and associated text) as well as the 5 practicals (idem) represent the data that will be evaluated.

Written online examination with open questions and true/false propositions, covering all 14 chapters of the theory (slides + text) and all 5 practicals (idem).
