Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In most professions, communication is an essential task of scientists. Indeed, scientists publish their research results (in oral or written form), write reports, introduce research proposals, summarise information etc. This course focuses on two essential means of communication: oral presentation and poster presentation. After a theoretical introduction, each student presents a seminar (oral + poster) based on a recent scientific paper which he/she can select among a panel of suggested papers related to topics taught in the different courses of the section.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will have learned how to:
- prepare an oral presentation - prepare clear, efficient, and attractive slides - prepare a poster - develop critical thinking with regard to scientific literature

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Pré-requisite: LANG0076-1 anglais 1 Lang0077-1 anglais 2
Co-requisite: LANG0082-1 anglais 3 DOCU0033-2 Formation à l'exploitation des ressources documentaires
The knowledge of PowerPoint is an advantage. Knowledge of the English language is essential, as papers are published in English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures, accomplishment of oral and poster presentation.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is organised during the 2nd quadrimester. Theoretical lectures (approx. 2-3 afternoons) are followed by student presentations.

Student's presence is compulsory for theoretical lectures, a minimum of 3 presentation sessions and the poster session (attendance will be recorded).

Recommended or required readings

PowerPoint slides will be available in pdf format. An international scientific publication (10-14 pages, in english), selected by the student from an exhaustive list, will have to be read and analysed.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is based on the students' seminars (oral + poster), and the participation to the discussions during the seminars given by the other students.
This assessment is the one that will be considered for the first session. So there is no examination in June-July. In case of fail, student will be asked, for the second session, to do the same work on another scientific paper.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

The student must be available on 12,13,14/2/2020 pm; and from 23/3 to 3/4/2020 pm
Students have the opportunity to present their seminar in English, in collaboration with the course LANG0082-1 ¿¿english 3. They can also search their article and additional resources during the course DOCU0033-2 Training in the exploitation of documentary resources.
The articles are chosen by the students in the first quadrimestre. They are invited to read the article to check that it is appropriate before the first class.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The course is organised during the 2nd quadrimester. Theoretical lectures (approx. 2-3 afternoons) are followed by student presentations. There is no distannce learning
Student's presence is compulsory for theoretical lectures.
Attendence at 1 presentation session (half a day) is compulsory.

Assessment subjects

Unchanged (all of the material seen in class).

Assessment methods

The poster session is canceled and replaced by the evaluation of a poster provided as a pdf file (30%). The oral presentation is done in a small group (8-9 students) by videoconference (70%).
A test of the visioconference platform with the students will be planned.
In case of failure, student will be asked, for the second session, to do the same work on another scientific paper.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the Aug-Sept 2020 session

Assessment subjects

Unchanged (all of the material seen in class).

Assessment methods

If the poster and oral presentation were presented in the first session, another article must be chosen (to be submitted for approval as soon as possible and before August 3).
If only the poster was presented in the first session (if score >= 10), the student can keep his poster rating and present the same article for the oral presentation. If the student wishes to improve their poster rating,  another article has to be chosen (to submit for approval as soon as possible and before August 3).
The poster is to be sent by pdf for August 17; 9 am; to the course supervisors (eric.gismondi@uliege.be; m.carnol@uliege, pdauby@uliege.be).
The oral presentation is done by videoconference on Lifesize.
The poster counts for 30% of the final rating, the oral presentation for 70%.
