Learning unit contents

This field trip objectives are to illustrate various notions seen during previous lessons on taxonomy, phylogeny, functional morphology, and ecology of organisms. The trip is thus not related to another course, but constitutes an integrated overview.
The student will choose between two field work placements taking place in two different locations: either in coastal marine areas (Roskoff, Brittany, France) or in terrestrial environments (Mont Rigi, Hautes Fagnes, Belgium). The chosen field placement counts for 4 credits. The number of places being limited, access to one or the other course will be determined by all the teachers on the basis of a cover letter where the student will argue his choice.
During the stay, students have the opportunity to observe and collect in situ organisms from different biotopes, organisms that they can keep living and study in the lab. Beside morphological and systematic aspects, various ecological approaches are made, or on the field or as experiments in laboratory. Different techniques and methods will be présented and applied in the field, to allow students to characterise environment, to quantify biodiversity and to measure various populations and communities characteristics. Lessons are also given to complete the knowledge about some biological groups of importance.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of this field trip is to integrate different notions approached in several theoretical lessons (morphology, phylogeny, ecology) to a peculiar biotope: either the intertidal zone of the Brittany coast or terrestrial and aquatic environments of the High Fens.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To have fulfilled the 180 ECTS of the Bachelor degree.
To have followed the courses related to the field trip, i.e. ecology, taxonomy & phylogeny, morphology, courses given during the same year of Master, or during the previous years (during Bachelor degree).

This field trip of course implies the presence of students on the field. Online connection not yet available in the Brittany intertidal zone or in the High Fens !

Recommended or required readings

A good knowledge of the theoretical aspects seen during the 1st quadrimester is required. Needed additional literature will be provided during the field course.
A special folder (with all the informations and activities related) will be distributed before the trip. Ppt slides of lessons given during the trip will be available during the stay.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is made during the last day of the stay, and comprises three parts:
- an individual questioning about the recognition of a dozen taxa.
- a multiple choise exam (20 questions) dealing with the various aspects approached during the stage
- a presentation (poxerpoint-type) by groups of 3 students about a biological taxon or a subject well-represented during the stay (including ecological, taxonomic,... aspects)
There is thus no document to be supplied at the end of the stay.
Important remark: The students must be physically present. There is no possibility to perform another work instead of the stage.

Organizational remarks

The field trip, this academic year, will take place from April the 2nd to 10th (Mont Rigi) or April 15 to 25, 2019 (Roskoff) (11 days -2 days for travel).
Students will stay at the Station (rooms for several people), very close to the labs where practicals will be done.
Meals will be served either at the Station (supper), or as picnic (diner) when on the field.
The transport of field material will be organised by ULiège Professors.
The transport of students is no more organised by ULiège. They have to organise by themselves the trip (by train, bus, car, bicycle...), in order to be present at the begining of the stage.
Fees of about 220€ will be asked to every participant. They actually include all the food and lodging costs (reduced by the University fees).
Transportation fees are not included. Organisers will be taking care of the transportation during the stay.
Extra informations will be given in due time. And can be obtained via the organisers.
