Learning unit contents

Political systems
- Overview of the different forms of political organisation and how they function
- Belgium as an example with its different levels of power (competences, method of negotiation, potential conflict, etc.)
- European Union: the three institutions and their specificities (organisation, how they function, nomination/election, budget, competences) with a particular focus on current affairs: Brexit, budgetary planning, etc.
 
2. Construction of public policies
- How are public policies set up? The common agricultural policy (CAP) as an example
- What influences them: the budgetary framework, political parties, politicians, economic crises, health crises, lobbies, scientific progress, etc.
 
3. Presentations by high officials, politicians and scientists who present the latest topics and their vision of the construction of public policies (2-3 per academic year)
4. Role-playing at the end of the course
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objectives of this course are to learn about and understand the 'workings' of political decision-making, better understand what influences political decisions and, subsequently, the implemented policies, and to exercise the students' analytical capabilities and critical sense.
By the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to understand how Belgium and the EU function on a political level. By the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to adopt a critical mind and understand the ins and outs of agricultural policies.
By the end of this teaching unit, students will be able to argue and participate in a chosen theme (role-playing at the end of the course).

Presentations by external guest-speakers and debates at the end of the presentation
