Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Theory

As the course is common to several sections of various faculties (Institute of Social Sciences, Institute of Public Health, Faculty of Psychology), an attention is granted to the diversity of the school and professional courses, but also to the waitings of students.
This course tends to link at the same time theoretical topics (the large sociological theories which had an interest for the ageing-related themes) and concrete problems (mistreatment, dependence, active ageing, etc.)

Practice

The works done in this part of the course aim to specialise the learner on one of the topics covered by the theoretical course, among which: demographic trends, types of retirement, problems of the older workers, representations of ageing, dependence and oldest age, migrant worker, sexuality and ageing, life in nursing homes, suicide of the elderly people, ageing for female, intergenerational relations...
The topic is chosen by the learner, in consultation with the teacher.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Theory

At the end of the course, the student will be able to remember and will have understood the main sociological and theoretical concepts met.
Especially, he will have acquired a critical glance on notions such as the dependence of elderly people, the older workers, the representations of old age...
He will be able to argue on these topics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory

The theoretical course will use in particular the following methods: - ex cathedra presentations  - framed debates - outside contributors - co-construction of knowledge with learners

Practice

The practical course will consist, for the students, alone or grouped by 2 or 3, to read, summarize, criticize (according to the concepts seen in the first part) and present to other students an article from approximately 20-30 pages or to make a personal work on a specific topic.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Theory

Two hours course each week, at the second semester.

Practice

5 sessions of 2h, beginning 1 months after the theoretical part.

Recommended or required readings

Theory

Course notes (slides) available after each course on My ULg and readings folder (articles by Caradec V., Gaullier X., Guillemard A.-M., Vrancken D. and other scientists).

Practice

See theoretical part (SOCI1095-A-a)

Assessment methods and criteria

Theory

The examination relates to the restitution and the comprehension of the course by the learner, but also on the capacity to put in prospect the concepts seen, to bring personal examples, or a critical glance.
The contents of the slides and the concepts developed orally are concerned by the evaluation.
Written examination (if 30+ students) or oral (if < or = 30 students). At the second session of examination, type of exam to decide. Date of exam to decide with the teacher (mainly first with students of public health department where it's a mandatory course).

Practice

These works will be evaluated without distinction between the students (excepted in case of an obvious difference of implication) on the quality of the work of analysis (summary and criticism of the text), on the quality of the oral transmission (presentation to other students). As well written documents as the oral presentation are evaluated.
Each part applies for one half of final cotation. The cotation of works will not be communicated before the final examination.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Theory

Teaching methods have been adapted as follows (except one session done by other researchers):
- slides with shorter oral comments
- summaries of articles, linked with the course, done by students volunteer
The content of all courses after the buildings were closed are on e-campus.

Practice

not applicable (no students this year)

Assessment subjects

Theory

The course consists of: - face-to-face sessions before the closing of teaching buildings - sessions of pre-recorded slides (slide by slide) which constitute the "spinal column" - syntheses of the articles as additional readings which develop the concepts, to a better understanding (the basic articles being sent for advisory purposes, but no question of the examination referring to it, only the summary material will be used for the examination).

Practice

not applicable (no student this year)

Assessment methods

Theory

The examination will consist of a work to be carried out, starting from sources provided by the teacher, and which will make it possible to evaluate the good integration of the courses and the capacity to use it.
The work methods will be communicated after the last course session (Thursday, May 7). The work must be returned fout weeks after the date on which it is communicated. Any personal situation making this deadline difficult may be communicated, an adaptation may be considered with the agreement of the MSSP and subject to demonstrated justification, related to the epidemy of Covid-19).
